The road to energy independence starts with a trip to Detroit this weekend. The Electric Drive Transportation Association is applauding the fact that the North American International Auto Show, set for Jan. 17-Jan. 25, will feature a plethora of alternatives to traditional gas-only vehicles.

On display will be five gas-electric vehicles, four vehicles all powered by electric battery (two available in late 2009 and two in late 2010); as well as two plug-in electric-drive hybrid vehicles (one by Ford, one by BYD).

In addition, a number of manufacturers will exhibit all-electric concept vehicles, including the Chrysler Town and Country EV, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV and a Cadillac EV.
Going green, it seems, is going upscale.
